Privacy Policy.

This Privacy Policy explains how Notch handles your personal data. We are committed to keeping your information safe and being transparent about what we collect.

1. Who We Are

Notch is a screen recording application developed by Alexander Lukashov, an independent software author based in Belgrade, Serbia.

2. Data We Collect

We collect minimal personal data, limited to what is necessary for license administration. When you purchase a license through our payment processor (Lemon Squeezy), we receive:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your country of residence

We do not require account creation and do not operate a sign-up or login system.

3. Information Sent by the Software

When you launch Notch, the app sends a small request to our update server (update.getnotch.co) to determine whether a newer version is available. This request contains:

  • A randomly-generated install identifier (UUID), created the first time you launch the app and stored locally. It is not tied to your name, email, license key, or any account.
  • Operating system family and major version (for example, "mac 15" or "win 11").
  • CPU architecture ("arm64" or "x64").
  • Currently installed app version (major / minor / patch).
  • License tier ("free" or "commercial") — but never the License Key itself.

We use this data to (a) return changelog entries relevant to your installed version, (b) understand which OS and architecture combinations are still in active use so we can target compatibility work, and (c) count distinct installs in aggregate. The randomly-generated install identifier lets us de-duplicate "100 launches by one user" from "100 different users launched once each" without identifying anyone.

The update-check request is processed by our update service (a Cloudflare Worker at update.getnotch.co) and the same five fields above are forwarded to PostHog for aggregate install statistics — see Section 6 for details on what PostHog stores and what we use it for.

When the Upgrade modal is opened, the Software also fetches the current commercial-license pricing from getnotch.co/pricing.json. This is a plain GET request with no body — only your IP address is visible in the server's access log, the same as any standard web visit. The downloaded installer files (.dmg / .exe) and the release manifest (latest.json) are fetched from download.getnotch.co the same way.

We do not collect behavioral telemetry — no click tracking, no feature-usage analytics, no recording-content data. We do collect aggregate install statistics (distinct install count by OS, app version, and license tier) via PostHog, exactly as described above.

Legal basis: legitimate interest in maintaining the Software, keeping licensees informed about updates relevant to their license, and ensuring the in-app pricing matches the website. We do not share this data with third parties beyond the service provider listed in Section 6, link it to your name or email, or use it for advertising.

The Software does not currently offer an in-app opt-out for the update check, because the checker is a core feature: without it, the Software cannot tell you when a security or compatibility update is available. If you wish to suppress the request, you may block traffic to update.getnotch.co at the network level — the Software remains fully functional offline.

4. How We Use Your Data

We use the data we receive exclusively for the following purposes and legal bases:

  • License administration — delivering your license key and verifying your license status. Legal basis: performance of a contract.
  • Customer support — responding to your questions and resolving technical issues. Legal basis: performance of a contract.
  • Product updates — notifying you about new versions and important changes to the Software, both via the in-app update checker (Section 3) and, where applicable, via email to Commercial License holders. Legal basis: legitimate interest (keeping licensees informed about updates relevant to their licensed software). You may opt out of email notifications at any time; the in-app update checker can be suppressed at the network level (see Section 3).

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.

5. Data We Do NOT Collect

Beyond the technical data described in Section 3, Notch runs entirely on your device. We do not collect, access, or transmit:

  • Your screen recordings, project files, or exported videos
  • Behavioral analytics, in-app event tracking, or feature-usage telemetry — we do not know which buttons you click, which features you use, or how long your recordings are
  • File contents, clipboard data, or any on-screen information
  • Your device hostname, IP address logs beyond standard web-server access logs, or any cross-application identifiers

Your recordings stay on your machine. We never see them.

6. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Lemon Squeezy — our Merchant of Record for payment processing. When you purchase a license, Lemon Squeezy handles the transaction and collects your payment information. We do not have access to your credit card or billing details. See Lemon Squeezy's Privacy Policy.
  • Plausible Analytics — a privacy-focused website analytics service used on this website (getnotch.co) only. Plausible does not use cookies or persistent identifiers. Limited technical data (page URL, referrer, browser type, country) is processed transiently to produce aggregate statistics. No individual visitors are tracked or identified. See Plausible's Data Policy.
  • PostHog — product analytics service that aggregates the install statistics described in Section 3 (random install identifier, OS family / major version, CPU architecture, app version, license tier). We use PostHog to answer questions like "how many active installs are on macOS 15 versus 14" — not "what features does user X use" or "when did user X last open the app". No personal data (name, email, License Key, recordings, file contents) is ever sent to PostHog. Our PostHog data is hosted in the European Union (eu.posthog.com). See PostHog's Privacy Policy.

7. Data Recipients & International Transfers

Your personal data may be shared with the following categories of recipients:

  • Lemon Squeezy (Merchant of Record) — receives payment and purchase data to process your transaction. Lemon Squeezy is based in the United States.
  • Plausible Analytics — processes anonymized website visit data. Plausible is based in the European Union.
  • PostHog — receives the install analytics described in Section 3 and aggregated as described in Section 6. Our PostHog data is hosted in the European Union (eu.posthog.com); no transfer outside the EEA takes place for this dataset.

Some of these services operate outside of Serbia and the European Economic Area. Where data is transferred to countries that do not provide an equivalent level of data protection, we rely on the service provider's standard contractual clauses or other appropriate safeguards as required by applicable law.

8. Cookies

This website does not use cookies. Our analytics provider (Plausible) is fully cookieless. No tracking, advertising, or third-party cookies are placed on your device when you visit getnotch.co.

9. Data Retention

Purchase records (name, email, country, license key) are retained for as long as necessary to fulfill our legal and tax obligations. Support correspondence is retained for six (6) months after resolution to provide continuity of service. You may request deletion of your data at any time, subject to our legal retention obligations.

10. Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the personal data we hold against unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. Access to personal data is limited to the Licensor and authorized third-party processors listed above. In the unlikely event of a data breach affecting your personal data, we will notify you and the relevant supervisory authority as required by applicable law.

11. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction — request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Deletion — request deletion of your personal data, subject to legal retention requirements.
  • Restriction — request restriction of processing in certain circumstances.
  • Portability — request a machine-readable copy of data you provided to us.
  • Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Complaint — lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. For users in Serbia, this is the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@getnotch.co.

12. Children's Privacy

Notch is not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected data from a child, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Software after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
