Troubleshooting.
Common issues and how to fix them.
Installation
Click "More info" and then "Run anyway". This warning appears because the app is new and hasn't built up enough reputation with Microsoft yet.
Make sure you're running macOS 11+ or Windows 10+. Try restarting your computer. If the issue persists, delete the app, re-download it, and install again.
These stripped-down Windows installations may be missing required system components. Download and install the Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft: https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe
Screen & Audio Permissions
Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording and make sure Notch is enabled. If it's already enabled, toggle it off and on again, then restart Notch.
Check that the correct microphone is selected in Notch's recording settings. On macOS, also verify that Notch has microphone permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
On macOS, make sure system audio toggle is enabled in Notch's recording panel before starting. If system audio still isn't captured, restart Notch. On Windows, system audio capture should work out of the box.
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording. If Notch is listed, remove it using the "−" button, then re-add it using "+". Restart Notch afterwards.
Recording
Close resource-heavy applications running in the background. If the issue persists, try lowering the recording resolution. Notch uses H.264 hardware encoding by default for minimal CPU impact.
This is a Windows Graphics Capture limitation. Minimized windows and some apps with DRM protection will show black frames. Use full-screen capture instead of window capture.
The webcam stream was likely interrupted — USB disconnect, permission change, or device conflict. Reconnect the camera and start a new recording.
This usually happens when disk space runs out. Check your available storage. Notch saves recordings to your user folder by default — make sure that drive has enough space.
Export
Some video codecs aren't natively supported by QuickTime. Go to Export settings and select H.264 — it has the best compatibility with macOS.
Switch to H.264 codec in export settings — it's the most reliable on Windows. For very long recordings (20+ minutes), try exporting shorter segments.
GIF encoding is CPU-intensive by nature. To speed it up, lower the frame rate to 15 FPS and choose a smaller size preset (720p) in export settings. For long recordings, consider using MP4 instead.
GIFs are limited by format — they support only 256 colors and have larger file sizes at higher resolutions. For best results, keep GIF exports at 720p or lower, and use 15 FPS. For higher quality, export as MP4 instead.
License & Activation
Open the editor, click "Upgrade to Pro" on the toolbar, then click "I have a license key", enter your key, and press Activate. You should have received the key via email from Lemon Squeezy after purchase.
Make sure you're copying the full key without extra spaces. Check that you're using the latest version of Notch. If the issue persists, email us from the address you used to purchase the key: hello@getnotch.co.
It depends on your license type. During checkout you can choose a 3-device license, which lets you activate on up to three computers at the same time. With a single-device license, you can only have one active machine at a time — to switch, click the Pro badge in the toolbar → Deactivate License, then activate with the same key on your new computer.
Check your spam/junk folder for an email from Lemon Squeezy. If you still can't find it, visit your Lemon Squeezy order page or email us: hello@getnotch.co.
